Does a large cavity mean I will eventually need a root canal?

Question by Sara: Does a huge cavity mean I will ultimately require a root canal?
Last year I had a three surface cavity filled. I didn't even know I had this cavitiy until finally the tooth really broke over Christmas. I went to the dentist as soon as possible and they filled the tooth. Does this big cavity mean in the future I will will need a root canal. I brush and floss my teeth regularly. I do not know why my old dentist missed this huge cavity.
